She was devoted to her family. She spent her life working for the betterment of others and giving freely of her time to a variety of organizations. She was member of the Extension Homemakers for 75 years, a longtime member of the Coal County Breeder’s Association, a member of the Coalgate Garden Club (where she served a term as District Vice-President), and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She volunteered for the Red Cross, serving as the liaison for Coal County soldiers and families during World War II and later. She was the Director for the Red Cross Blood Mobile for 25 years. During that time she worked 48 blood drives. She served many years on the Coal County Board of Health, the Mary Hurley Hospital Board, the Round Hill Rural Water Board, and for the Coal County Ambulance Service. She was very involved in politics and worked tirelessly for the Democratic Party in Coal County. She was a long time and active member of the First United Methodist Church in Coalgate. She received many honors including Volunteer of the Year for the State Health Department and a certificate congratulating her on being a “Yellow Dog Democrat”. She worked hard for improvements east of town in including services for telephone, electricity, and rural water. She was active in school matters and was the homeroom mother Class of “46 for their four years in high school. She was a good wife to Dave and a devoted mother to JoAnn.
