Charles Jerome Sturgis, 90, passed away on May 29, 2026, in Durant, Oklahoma. He was born on August 18, 1935, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Arthur Jerome Sturgis and Vera Muriel (Hayward) Cook.
Charles attended school in Michigan. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Following his military service, he worked as a truck driver. He was an owner operater. Driving his truck was a profession he enjoyed for many years.
He was married to Doris Mae Lovell in 1966. Doris preceded him in death on March 26, 2001. He later married Betty Jo Sturgis on April 18, 2008. Betty preceded him in death on August 14, 2015. On April 13, 2024 Charles married Hazel Marie Sturgis, the love of his life in Mami, OK. Charles enjoyed truck driving, working on trucks, fishing, and riding his Harley. He especially loved spending time outdoors and tinkering with vehicles. The biggest loves of his life were his wife, and his grandbabies. He loved them very much.
Charles is survived by his wife Hazel Sturgis of the home; son, Charles Sturgis II and wife Jean of Lane, OK; daughter, Kelley Sturgis of Lane, OK; son, Jeffery Stanley and wife Cindy Tulsa, OK; son, Ray Shatswell and wife Aleena of Mounds, OK; daughter, Jennifer Henderson and husband Harold of Prettywater, OK; his grandchildren, Cathlina “Cappy” Schultz and husband Paul of Kuna, ID, Charles “Buddy” Sturgis III and wife Keli of Lane, OK, Carolyn “Stormy” Sturgis of Edmond, OK, Cynthia “Pudgy” Sturgis of Sherman, TX, Dawn “Punky Poo” Spencer and husband Derek of Atoka, OK, Lucas “Tater” Abbott of Lane, OK, and Ashlii “Wedgy” Smith and husband Jeffery of Bruno, OK.
He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, including Zaya Schultz, Brayden “The Boss” Wood, Serenity “Skoshi” Wood, Wyatt “Wyatt Burp” Townsend, Gannon “Slick” Abbott, Kinsley “Star” Abbott, Tayden “Spud” Abbott, Andrew “FatCat” Smith, Dusty “Skeeter” Smith, Mayci “Shugee” Smith, Hunter Sawyer, and Kaden Sawyer; sisters, Linda Carter, Vera Ann Motter; great great grandson, Bryson Paul Schmeichel; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Jerome Sturgis and Vera Muriel (Hayward) Cook Sturgis; his wives, Doris Mae Sturgis and Betty Jo Sturgis; his stepfather, Paul Lamon; his brother, Daniel Sturgis; and his sisters, Naomi, Lee, and Bert.
