Obituary

A Celebration of Life for Delbert Glen Powell, Lehigh, OK, will be held Tuesday, November 24th, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Brown's Funeral Service Chapel in Atoka with Bro Steve Havener and Steve Walker officiating.  Interment will be in Green Meadows Cemetery, Atoka, OK with Brown's Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.                 Mr. Powell was born July 4, 1953, to Glen "Hopper" and Vera (Evans) Stanphill Fritcher Powell at Dallas, TX and passed away Saturday November 21st, 2015 at his residence in Lehigh at the age of 62. Delbert lived in Lehigh during his childhood years and attended Lehigh School through the eighth grade.  He lived in Atoka and attended Atoka High School his ninth through eleventh grades before joining the U.S. Navy on March 11, 1971, at age 17.  He served two years in the U.S. Navy.  Following his discharge from the Navy, Delbert lived in Albuquerque, NM, approximately one year before returning to Lehigh. He married Goldie White on August 15, 2005, at Coalgate.  Delbert developed an interest in firefighting while attending a firefighting training class in boot camp.  That interest eventually led to 23 years of service as a volunteer firefighter and chief of the Lehigh Volunteer Fire Department.  Delbert suffered a major burn accident in 1974, and during his long recuperation period he began spending time at the Lehigh Fire Station.  He went on fire runs with the Lehigh, Coalgate and Atoka fire departments before joining the Lehigh Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1976.  He was named fire chief following the retirement of the fire department coordinator Freddie Brice, and he held that title until 1999.  He also served 17 years on the Lehigh City Council as Mayor.  Delbert served in law enforcement as Tupelo city marshal and as a Coal County deputy sheriff. His primary occupation was that of truck driver.  Over the years, he was a coast-to-coast driver for several companies.  He was owner/operator of a dump truck service in Lehigh and then owned and operated a truck service that worked for various companies throughout the United States.  In 2007, Delbert began escorting oversized loads throughout the country until cancer-related health issues began escalating.  On November 2, 2015, he pulled his commercial insurance and retired after he and Goldie completed a run to Coffeyville, KS.                 Survivors include his wife, Goldie White Powell of the home; mother, Vera Powell Fritcher of Lehigh, OK; granddaughter, Tiffany Marie Powell and great-granddaughter, Khloi Marie Daniels, both of the home; sister, Linda Powell Carter of Atoka, OK; brother, Dale Powell and wife Paula of Lehigh, OK; sister, Kathy McClain of McAlester, OK; sister, Becky Brown of Kiowa, OK; sister, Tina Stowe of Lehigh; three daughters, one son and two stepdaughters; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including the brotherhood of firefighters and special friends Frank Williams, Clarita, OK, Ricky Ellis of Tupelo, OK and Steve Walker of Atoka, OK.                 He was preceded in death by his father, Glen "Hopper" Powell, maternal grandparents, Omar and Dora Evans; maternal great-grandparents, Otis and Bernice Stanphill; paternal grandparents, Elmer and Pearl Powell; and brother-in-law, John Carter.                 Casketbearers will be Gary Powell, Kyle Stowe, Bradley Stowe, Jason Gibson, Dale Powell, Jr., and Brandon Morrison.                 Honorary casketbearers will be Ryan Morrison, Dakota Powell, Casey Stowe, Trey Culliffer, Cody Gibson, Tyler Powell and Justin Barnett                 Prior to his passing, Delbert asked the Record Register to include this message in his obituary:                 "Thank you, Mama, for everything you have done for me throughout my life.
