Dorothy Pauline
Underwood
February 2, 1926 – January 3, 2020
Dorothy Pauline (Rhoades) Underwood was the only child of Alvin and Sallie Rhoades. She was born on February 2, 1926 near Edge, Texas. Pauline loved the outdoors, as a child she enjoyed riding horses and working cattle with her dad. She attended Kurten Elementary and High School in Bryan, Texas. After graduation she went to Makenzie Baldwin Business School. She worked at Texas A&M as a secretary, and that is where she met Medford Underwood. They married August 24, 1947 in Wheelock, Texas. Med and Pauline had two daughters, Judy and Jan. In 1952, they moved their family to Atoka. They owned a grocery store, a real estate and insurance agency and raised cattle and horses. They were very involved members of First Methodist Church in Atoka since 1952. Pauline and Med were sponsors of the Methodist Youth Fellowship for many years. She was on various church committees, attended bible studies, taught Bible School,and Sunday School. She was a very faithful visitor to the nursing home and hospital. She was a PTA mom, sponsor for glee club, band and FHA. Pauline was an incredible seamstress; she made prom dresses and wedding dresses for the girls, and anything else they needed. She also had a talent for cross stitching. She spent her happiest hours working in her yard, mowing, trimming, and planting her beautiful flowers. She adored spending time with her grandchildren. Granny loved rocking them when they were little and playing puzzles, looked at picture albums and read or told stories to all of her 16 babies.When she had to spend more time being less active, she also had some special animals that kept her company. She loved her fur babies. Later in life, Med and Pauline enjoyed bus tours with American Farmers and Ranchers. They loved traveling to new places and making many lifelong friends with people from across the state.
Pauline passed from her earthly home on January 3, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Medford Underwood, her parents Alvin and Sallie Rhoades, and her in-laws, Frank and Hettie Underwood.
She is survived by her daughters, Jan Underwood of Tushka, Judy and Tommy Thomas of Oklahoma City. Grandchildren; Stephane and Oscar Perez of Tushka, Mindy and Jason Campbell of Durant, Kate and Tyson Littau of Woodward, and Stacy and Garrett Hammond of Durant. Great Grandchildren are Taylor, Tori and Tannah Stephens, Tyler and Wyatt Campbell, Cooper and Josie Littau and Piper Hammond. Great-great Grandchildren are Ava, Hadlee, Haidyn and Kovey.
She was blessed to have very special cousins, other relatives and dear friends. Granny Underwood will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
