Obituary

Helen "Louise" Thompson Crews, age 90, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 8th, 2025, at Atoka County Medical Center.   Louise was born at home on March 7, 1935, to Arthur Henry "Dobe" Thompson and Lily "Sis" Yates Thompson in the rural Atoka County community of Iron Stob, four miles south of Lane.  She had recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

Louise primarily attended school at Iron Stob and Atoka High School.  As a high school senior, she met Quincey "Muggs" Crews, a local logger, while selling raffle tickets for a drawing at school.  After a brief courtship, Muggs and Louise married in January 1953.

Over a span of 25 years, Muggs and Louise welcomed four children:  Quinna, Arthur, Blossom and Kelli.  Her family expanded with the arrival of eleven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.  She was affectionately referred to as "Maam"  -- a name that originated with her first grandson, Britt Lewis; it was later updated to "Maama" by her fifth grandson, Ed Batchelor.  Her first great, great grandchild is due any day.

"Maama" touched so many lives through her commitment to her family, her community, and her church.  She firmly believed that having children later in life "kept her young."  She spent countless hours with her children and grandchildren -- taking them swimming, skating, fishing, and on road trips across the country!  She loved her community – Louise was a fixture at Lane Elementary School events, always attended local benefits, workdays, and reunions, and was an ardent supporter of Atoka High School basketball.  She loved her church – Louise taught Sunday School and VBS, cooked for potlucks and other church meals, kept the nursery, and served on various church committees over the years, including the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the History Committee.  She truly lived out the Biblical command to "act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8)." Her final prayer was "Lord, I want to be a servant."  May we all attempt to follow her example.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Quincey A. Crews, Jr in 2010; her brothers, Wayne Thompson and Ray Thompson; and her parents, Dobe and Sis.
