Obituary

(Lily) Janice Fomby Lane passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at home. She was born April 29, 1937 in Ardmore, OK to Harold Fomby and (Mary) Hazzie Culley Fomby. Janice grew up and attended school in Dallas, TX, where she graduated from Adamson High School in 1954. She then attended the University of Texas in Arlington and Texas Women's University. She married the love of her life, Russell Lane, on June 6, 1959 in Lewisville, TX. Janice worked many years as a cook at Harmony School and eventually retired as the kitchen supervisor. Janice got her Real Estate Sales License and sold for Century 21 here in Atoka for approximately 5 years in the early 1980's. She was well known among her family and friends for her Harmony School yeast and cinnamon rolls. Janice was active in the Harmony Extension Homemakers Club and in 1976 was voted the Oklahoma Homemaker of the Year. She enjoyed tending a garden and spent many hot summers canning the vegetables she had grown. Janice was also a master seamstress and loved to sew.  She volunteered helping 4-H students with their sewing and cooking projects.  She also served by sewing lap quilts for veterans and the elderly interned in nursing homes.  In the past few years, she enjoyed sewing for babies orphaned in Uganda and displaced by the hurricane in Haiti. She was also an avid quilter and for many years was a member of the Atoka Pieces and Patches Quilt Guild and the Knotty Quilters.  Janice and her husband, Russell, also had a gift of hospitality and thru the years had given home to over 30 friends and relatives. She had a servant's heart, but foremost, she loved being a wife, mother, and granny to her 9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
Janice is survived by her daughter Teena Knight, and husband Tim of Sherman, TX, sons Brett Lane and wife Tamara of Durant, Matt Lane and wife Carol of Atoka., and son-in-law Dr Bob Darst of Tavanier Beach, FL. Grandchildren Teisa Lane of Heavner, OK, Whitney Jamet of Sherman, TX, Cassandra Little of Sherman, TX, Raynee Eaves and husband Caleb of Bentley, Kendall Lane and wife Lindsey of Atoka, Jake Knight and TJ Knight of Sherman, TX, Jennifer Hinojosa and husband Jaime of Allen, TX, Patty Sparks and husband Sonny of Tavanier Beach, FL, Shanna Thompson and husband Woody of Colombia, SC and Bobby Darst and wife Sonya of Midland, TX.  Great Grandchildren Christian Sharp and wife Rebecca of Durant, Victoria Sharp of Heavner, Billy Sharp of Durant, Ciara McFarland and Hazzie McFarland of McAlester, Whisper Trueblood of Muskogee, Will, Jonah, Samuel and Adeline Eaves of Bentley, Cole, Harper, and Kenzie Lane of Atoka, Alabama and Jack Chitwood of Atoka, Liliana and Tripp Jamet of Sherman, TX, Morgan Pitt of Rattan, OK, Felip Hinojosa of Allen, TX, Great Great Grandchildren Raylynn and Jackson Sharp of Durant, Aniya and Azleigh Crowson of McAlester, brother Jack Fomby of Atoka, sisters Helen Traweek of Hempstead, TX and Mary Rutsis of Royce City, TX, close friend Frankie Byrd, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other dear friends and relatives.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Russell Lane, her parents Harold and Hazzie Fomby, daughter Pat Darst, granddaughter Jennifer Trueblood, great granddaughter Cheyenne Sharp, brother Jerry Fomby, and sister-in-law Earlene Fomby.
Funeral services will be held at Victory Life Church with pastors Adam Canler and Paul Butler officiating.  Pallbearers are Dean Jackson, Alan Whitehead, and her grandsons Kendall Lane, Jake Knight, TJ Knight and Christian Sharp.  Honorary pallbearers are Lester Moore, Roger Holley, Steve Swindall, Mike Granger, Donnie Allen, Dale Nanney, James Fomby, Harold Fomby, Justin Fomby, Josh Fomby, Billy Sharp, and Ronnie Harper.
