Obituary

Mary Lucille (Williams) Watson was born in Oakland, California, on July 30, 1942. She attended grade school in Wilson, OK before moving to Burleson, TX where she graduated high school. After receiving a bachelor's degree in English at East Central University in Ada, she taught for 33 years, 26 years of which were at Atoka Public Schools. Mary couldn't leave her home without meeting former students in the stores and other places of business around Atoka. Following her retirement in 2000, she immediately went to work for Gerald Eaves managing his office and finally truly retired in 2022.

In 1979, Mary and Carrol Watson were married at their home in Bentley, Oklahoma at which time Mary inherited four children: Alan, Sarah, David and Genie. Carrol passed in 1989 from cancer and since Mary has lived in Atoka.

Mary's favorite pastime was reading mystery novels, reading at least one full book a day since she retired. She served 30 years on the board of Counseling, Inc., a non-profit agency serving youth and families in Atoka, Marshall, Johnston, and Murray counties whose mission is to prevent youth from entering or further advancing in the juvenile justice system.

A beloved educator and a true inspiration, Mary passed away on December 2, 2024. For 33 years, she dedicated her life to teaching not just English, but also the power of self-expression, empathy, and resilience.

More than a teacher, Mary was a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of light. She encouraged her students to think critically, question the status quo, and stand up for what they believed in. Her classroom was a space where creativity flourished, and individuality was celebrated.

Mary was more than just a name; she was a force of nature. Her selfless dedication to her students and her community left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. She was the kind of teacher who inspired generations, shaping young minds and nurturing future leaders.

We mourn her loss deeply, but we also celebrate her extraordinary life. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of her family, students, colleagues, and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Lennie Williams, her older brother James Williams, her husband Carrol Watson and special cousin Margaret (Lou) Mitchell.

She is survived by four stepchildren: Alan Watson and wife Holly, Sarah Steffes and husband Bryan, David Watson and wife Christie, and Genie Funk. Ten grandchildren: Collin Watson, William Funk, Conner Funk, Tyler Funk, Donovan Funk, Carter Watson, Christine Funk, Casie Watson, Carson Watson, Michelle Funk, nephews Jamison Williams (wife Halee and son Jay), Dusty Snow (daughter Brooklyn) and niece Randy Snow.
