Dr. Melvan Hershall Kirksey, age 92, an Atoka, OK resident for the past 30 years previously lived in Maryland many years and grew up in Ft. Gibson, OK. He was born on Thursday, February 11, 1932, to Carl and Ruby T. (Baughman) Kirksey, at Ft. Gibson, OK. Melvan passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024 at Durant, OK. He graduated for Ft. Gibson High School and went on to attend Goerge Washington University where he received a Doctorate Degree in Denistry. Melvan was a dentist im private practice in Maryland. He retired as Dentist from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Mack Alford. Melvan proudly served his country in The USAF. He married Joan Rose (Karwacki) in 1953 at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C. They celebrated 70 years of marriage before her passing on July 21, 2023. Melvan was a Roman Catholic and a member of St. Patrick's in Atoka. He was an active member of the Atoka County Republican party. His wife Joan and he loved ballroom dancing. He was an academic and loved to read, caring for neighbors and took care of Joan the last 10 years of her illness.
Melvan is survived by his children, Melvan H. Kirksey Jr. of Jacksonville, Fl, Lisa L. Kirksey and Jeanie Locicero of Placitas, NM, Alan J. Kirksey and wife Ginger of Bolivar, MO, Melody Jones and husband Michael of Clearwater FL; grandchildren, Christopher Vincent Kirksey and wife Madison of Austin, TX, Jessica Ana Kirksey of Georgia, Sarah Kirksey, Daniel Kirksey and wife Chasity of Petaluma, CA, Mikayla Jones of Clearwater, FL; great-grandchildren, Iris, Beau, Cashus, Brock, and Parker; sister, Jacqueline Nickles of Wood Lake, CA; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.
Melvan was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Kirksey; parents, Carl and Ruby Kirksey; sister, Gladys Kirksey; brother in law.
