Obituary

Robert Earl Umsted, age 87, a longtime Caney, OK resident, was born on Sunday, February 9, 1930, to Leslie Earl Umsted, at Boggy Bottom in a log cabin in Atoka County, OK.  Robert passed from this life on Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Oak Ridge Nursing Center in Durant, OK.  He attended Tushka Public School. Robert was a Minister, rancher, and owned Umsted paint and body shop in Atoka for over 25 years, where he  retired at the age of 55. He was also the Mayor of Caney, OK and was active in the opening of the Caney Nutrition Center which served meals to many senior citizens in the area.  Robert started working as a young man and was very successful in life. Robert proudly served his country in The Navy and the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. In the Navy he was a Seaman Apprentice from February 16, 1947-1954. He married Bessie Alene (Workman) on Sunday, April 12th, 1953 at Durant, OK. They had 64 wonderful years together.  Robert was an ordained Freewill Baptist Minister. He pastored the Caney Freewill Baptist Church and the Pleasant View Freewill Baptist Church in Tushka, OK. He loved serving the Lord. Robert was a loving husband and dad and loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved his brothers and sisters dearly. He enjoyed ranching, riding horses and was active in the establishment of the Caney Round Up club and he rode with the Caney Reds, World Champion Relay Team.
Robert is survived by his wife, Bessie Alene Umsted of the home in Caney, OK; children, Rickey Earl Umsted of Caney, OK, Vicki Kirkpatrick and husband Joe of Durant, OK, Mickey Lee Umsted and wife Lesley of Coweta, OK; brothers, David Umsted of Krebs, OK, Gus Earl Umsted and wife Janie of Durant, OK, Jess Umsted and wife Kelly of Durant, OK; granddaughters, Leslie Marie Graham of Caney, OK, Lisa Diane Taylor of Caney, OK, Jonna Contreras of Durant, OK, Lori Ford of Durant, OK, Kindra Richeson and husband Ty of Milburn, OK; grandson, Dakota Mick Umsted of Murfreesboro, TN; 11 great grandchildren;  along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many lifelong friends.
Robert is preceded in death by his father, Leslie Earl Umsted; sisters, Evelyn McLaney, Betty Cope; brothers, Charles Umsted, Ronald "Indian" Umsted.
