Obituary

Willie David Kirkpatrick was born December 19, 1934, in Bromide, OK, to Arlie Kirkpatrick and Leola Phelps, he passed away on September 9, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.  Willie married Mevelyn Wisdom on September 24, 1958, in Rock Island, Illinois.

Willie is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Mevelyn; his son Willie David "Andy" Kirkpatrick, Jr. and wife Julie, of Tishomingo, OK; his granddaughters, Brandi Kirkpatrick, of Tishomingo, OK and Katie VanBuskirk and husband Devon, of Overbrook, OK; his grandson, Willie David "Trey" Kirkpatrick, III and wife Jillienne, of Norman, OK; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Kirkpatrick and Grayson VanBuskirk, both of Overbrook, OK, as well as other relatives and friends.

Willie was a graduate of Bromide High School and Murray State College in Tishomingo, OK.  In 1953, Willie joined the United States Marine Corps. After basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, he was stationed at Camp Lejune where he was a field teletype operator until 1955.  During his time in the USMC, he was also stationed in Vieques, Puerto Rico for a short time.  He was employed by Contract and Materials in Illinois for several years, finishing as a pipeline foreman, working in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.  In 1964, Willie and his family moved back to Oklahoma and chose to live in Bromide, where he continued working for the pipeline.  Willie was diagnosed with cancer in 1981, and after finishing treatments, he and other cancer survivors helped found Johnston County Reaching Out, which he helped serve in various capacities until his death.  Willie was a devoted member of Bromide Baptist Church since 1981, where he attended faithfully, served as an ordained deacon, and helped serve the church in any capacity asked.  Willie was elected as county commissioner for Johnston County District 1 in 1982, where he served the county for 16 years, until his retirement in 1999. After retiring as county commissioner, Willie continued doing what he loved, hosting annual fish fries for family and friends, playing dominoes throughout the county, and spending time with his family tending to cattle on their land.  Willie was also a member of the Wapanucka Masonic Lodge as a 32nd Degree Mason.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Clyde Germany, his brother, Kenneth Wayne Kirkpatrick, and wife, Lila, his sister Tenna Lou "Lady" Simmons, and husband, Leroy, and a great-granddaughter, "Lemon".
